In His Own Words

About Him

I would like to think I'm witty. (It may be just a delusion.) I think I'm good company to women, especially those who like a good natter. (Smart - not pretentious - conversation turns me on, and makes me want a woman more.) I have an insatiable appetite for learning new things. I have learnt that I have to (more than) occasionally step outside of my comfort zone. And - c'mon, this is about romance, not a sitting of the UN - I have learnt to believe in the insanely high expectations of romance and the L-word again. For a while there I had lost my faith. I grew cynical. Then I learnt that one can have crazy fun with the right(ish) other person. And that you can laugh - a lot - with her. That is the wonderfully delirious illusion I want to put to the test again.

I like to think I'm a moral person who is not prescriptive about others' morality. (You wanna swing, neighbours? Good for you. Just not my cup of tea, if you don't mind.) I'm an atheist who used to believe quite fervently, and knows the power of believing in a higher power or a spiritual dimension, and so has no interest in denying other people their faith. (Although I know the atheism scares off the women who either believe in a God or a spiritual self.) The only quote I can think of that defines, as much as it can, my moral being? A Russian proverb used by writer John le Carre in one of his books, which goes something like this: Sometimes you have to think like a hero just to act like a merely decent human being.

About His Ideal Match

I like kind women. (Not so much to me; to others, especially waiters. It's about the only good marker of a decent person.) A woman who can laugh at herself. (The essence of a sense of humour, I think.) Who understands that life can be hard (for most), but that we can still laugh. I'm not too fussy about shape and size, although I do believe in sexual chemistry. (We must want to jump each other's bones, after all.) I like strong-minded women who like thinking. I get turned off by women who conform their personalities to the men they date. (They can if they like; just not going to work for me.) I like my women eclectic. Bookish girls who want to scamper up a mountainside; serious girls who pull faces at babies; girls fussy over where they eat who don't mind a messy boerie roll occasionally.

As to children: I have three (from one woman, I'm proud to say)(although I have no issue if a woman has multiple children from multiple men, I will add). I would probably not want more. Although I have fallen in love with a younger woman who wanted children, and so in love was I, I was willing for her sake. Luckily the relationship didn't work out. Point? When you fall in love, you do things that will make the other person happy. That may include having more children.

And, oh yes, a woman who is willing to go see 'Exorcist' at Kirstenbosch with me would be great. A woman willing to put herself through that - a romantic setting, a horror movie - would impress me.
